Many Veterans within Germany will be aware of, and indeed may have participated in, the Nijmegen Marches. This year the 93rd Nijmegen marches will take place from 21 -24 July 2009.
This event, which has its origin in 1909 with a scant 306 participants, now plays host to teams from over 100 different countries and over 34 000 entries. The marches cover a different route on each of its four days through the provinces of Gelderland, Limburg and Brabant, and in the surroundings of the city of Nijmegen. In the four days of marching one of three different distances is to be walked every day: 30, 40 or 50 km. - classification is made according to age and gender.

Participants are well catered for during the four days of marching and several activities and events are organised to celebrate the passing of the marches, including the official opening of the Marches, the Flag parade, a memorial service at the military ceremony at Groesbeek and the ‘Blister Ball’ on the final evening.
