Commander of 102 Logistic Brigade, Brigadier Nitsch, visited York Barracks on Friday 9th October where he met soldiers from 8 Regt RLC. 41 soldiers from the regiment have recently undertaken work based learning and attained Key Skills qualifications and NVQs in such areas as communications, application of numbers and information, storage and warehousing and driving goods vehicles.
Mrs Jo Hill, the operations manager for DEFLOG VQ Trust in Germany said “these soldiers have done really well, they arrived in September and even though they had just moved here the regiment was really co-operative in allowing soldiers to complete their assessments. We even had an assessor deployed with the soldiers to the Czeck Republic so they could be assessed on certain units of the NVQ’s and the regiment supported that. The regiment has even written a Charter which dictates how the regiment will work alongside DEFLOG VQ Trust to enable soldiers to achieve their qualifications in the future. 8 Regt also gave us the real estate to develop into a learning centre which will benefit all regiments in Munster. For all these reasons we have put 8 Regt RLC forward to the Best Unit Award which is presented on the 29th October.”
Pte Daniel McGlynn of 3 Sqn attained an NVQ in driving goods vehicles which involved a theory and practical assessment “It is a good qualification to have because it is of used both in the army and in 'civvy street'.”
