RLC(G) 7-A-SIDE Hockey Tournament

A cold, wet and windy day saw 5 teams from RLC Regiment across Germany converge at Princess Royal Barracks for a day of 7-a-side hockey.
Each team played 4 matches and were awarded 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.  The qualifying matches were 25 minutes long, resulting in an exhausting 1 hour 40 minutes of hockey played throughout the day by each side – even more for the winners and runners up who clicked up an extra hour of play.

RLC(G) 7-A-SIDE Hockey Tournament

The 40-minute final was played between 7 Transport Regiment and 2 LSR’s A Team.  2 LSR dominated play all the way through the match but the score at full time remained stubbornly 0-0, largely due to the sterling defence work done by Central Defender Steve Stockman from 7 Transport Regiment.  The weather and length of the day had obviously taken its toll on the players both physically and mentally, as there were plenty of exciting near-misses at goal and some rather more school-boy handling errors as the game went into extra time.  Still firmly stuck at 0-0 after extra time, the winning team was decided with penalty flicks.  The final score was 3-2 to 7 Transport Regiment.
Overseeing the day’s play, and getting wet on the pitch himself, was Major Jonathan Timmis, OC 22 CS Sqn.  “We’ve had a really tremendous day.  Hockey is a great sport for the Army because it is so gender-free, and it is easy for a novice to pick up the basics with teams of mixed ability like those that are here today.  I’m very pleased to see some complete novices on the pitch and I would like to congratulate them on their guts and determination.  We work hard, and I think we need to re-learn how to play even harder!”

Umpires Craig ‘Mitch’ Mitchell and John Frame congratulated all the teams on a superb and entertaining days play.
