Lister School in Herford has celebrated Remembrance Day this year by planting bulbs around the schools grounds.
After discussions last year with the school council to decide what would be an appropriate way to involve the whole school in the celebrations, it was agreed that the planting of bulbs would be a fitting tribute.
Alex Thorpe, Head Teacher explained the reason behind the decision to plant the bulbs. ‘When the bulbs are planted after our silence today we will think about why we’re planting them and when spring comes the memory is brought back to us again. This will encourage the children not just to remember on the 11th of November but to remember all the year around’.
The school grounds were split into sections and the classes asked to choose where they would like to plant their bulbs. The planting was completed with enthusiasm by all students, each having their own thoughts on the significance of the bulbs.
Alexander Baker, a Year 6 student felt, ‘The bulb represents the soul of the person who has died and if we don’t remember them they will be long forgotten and if that happens it will be really bad’.
Tom Trevitt, Science Teacher at the school organised the event.
‘Bulbs seem to have this magical ability, especially when they’re outside, to appear in the spring and break us out of the desolation of winter. They have this magical quality of bringing on the spring, the warm weather and becoming a symbol of hope’.
