The internationally acclaimed choir of Wells Cathedral will be visiting Gütersloh between July 12th and 17th. During their visit, the choir will be performing a series of concerts and a choral evensong to which all members of the BFG community are invited.
Wells Cathedral, situated in England’s smallest city has maintained a choral tradition virtually unbroken for over 800 years. Boys and men for all that time have sung the services, and in 1994 the choral foundation at Wells was greatly enriched by the addition of a girls choir. Wells Cathedral Choir consists of eighteen boy choristers, eighteen girl choristers and the twelve men of the Vicars Choral. Records of the Vicars Choral go back to 1136 and it is known that there were boys singing at Wells even earlier.
In addition to singing the daily services in the cathedral, the choir undertakes a regular schedule of broadcasts, recordings and recital tours. The choir features in the latest CD release by Jools Holland, entitled ‘The Informer’ and featuring Ruby Turner and Beverley Knight.
Josh Betley (14) , a former pupil of Blankenhagen Primary School, auditioned for the choir and was accepted as a probationary chorister in September 2004. He has sung with the choir for the last five years and concluded his tenure in 2009 as Head Boy Chorister.
