Veterans Stand to Attention |
As 2008 marks the Centenary of the formation of the TA, and to commemorate this year’s Veterans Day, Paderborn Garrison will host a series of events on Saturday 28th June.
The events will be British Forces Germany’s only opportunity to pay tribute and honour the service provided by our veterans. The event will be open to all UK veterans residing in mainland Europe, Garrison members and their dependants.
|
Veterans will parade alongside Garrison Units at an open air service and for those veterans who have pre-registered to attend the event, a limited 150 will attend a lunch hosted by the GOC in the NATO Officers Mess. A forum to discuss veterans’ issues will then follow.
Concurrently, any remaining veterans and their families, together with other garrison visitors will have the opportunity of visiting a number of exhibits, both historical and modern, with catering and refreshments stands also on hand.
Registrations for attendance (Veterans only), must be received no later than Friday, 30th May 2008. You are requested to provide details about your vehicle for security reasons. Post your registration form to: Martin Kinsey, HQ 20th Armoured Brigade, Normandy Bks, Bielfelder Str 213, 33104 Paderborn (BFPO 16). For further information regarding the Veterans Day event, telephone 05254 982 2022. |
Calling All Veterans
For generations our Armed Forces have served their country across the world in many roles from war fighting, peacekeeping and reconstruction to home defence.
In doing so, they have defended our country, our way of life and our cherished values.
It is important to focus on supporting veterans of all ages, by celebrating, and raising public awareness of, their achievements and their contribution to society. To promote recognition of veterans by the wider British public, the unique and unifying symbol of the HM Armed Forces Veterans Badge was introduced.
Veterans are former members of HM Armed Forces (Navy, Army or RAF - regular or reserve). Indeed the term applies to all UK ex-Servicemen and women.
There are an estimated 5.5 million in the UK and with their wives, husbands, partners or children, they comprise the 10.5 million strong Veterans Community.
Veteran’s status also applies to a number of special groups such as those who served in Polish detachments under British command in WWII and Merchant Mariners who saw duty in military operations. Veterans need not have served overseas or in conflict.
For further information about the lapel badge or any issues regarding Veterans in general, go to the www.veterans-uk.info website, or call: Free Helpline: 0800 169 2277 (from UK) or 0044 1253 866043 from overseas
Also, Merchant Navy Seafarers and fishermen who served in a vessel at a time when it was operated to facilitate military operations by HM Armed Forces have been formally commemorated with the launch of the UK Merchant Seafarers Veterans Badge. This is the only variant of the HMS Armed Forces Veterans Badge and recognises the unique service provided by merchant seafarers in support of military operations.
For info on the UK Merchant Seafarers Badge, go to the www.mna.org.uk website, or call: 01472 851130 or 0044 1472 851130 from overseas.
