Top garrison chefs within 20th Armd Bde, contributed 87 cakes in the annual Christmas Cake Competition held on Normandy Barracks’ Cheshire kitchen in categories that included the best of the military Chefs, Non Caterers and even a SCE School child category.
All the cakes were pre made with ingredients donated by NAAFI, to keep the competition fair and deliciously edible, relying only on the skills of the chefs to turn the base into a work of art along a Christmas theme.
Lt Col Bonner MBE said that the standard was ‘impressive’, with 5RIFLES winning top spots in the Private, JNCO and SNCO categories. The cake belonging to expert Chef Cpl Griffin who will soon go onto instructing at Winchester, also went on to win 2nd place in the best cake overall category. 5RIFLES Sgt Allen said: “this is great for Catering Platoon, we have a good name in the battalion and I am sure the CO is going to be very happy with the result.”
Other winners include 28 Engr Regiment novice chefs, Mr Longear and Mrs Richards for their creations, as well as QRH and 35 Engr Regiment with the kids category being won by sisters Sophie and Chloe Barnett whose father is the Master Chef at 3CS Bn REME.
Garrison Business Manager, Mr Dave Jones commented: “The technical skills are excellent and we have judged on novelty, effort, presentation and appearance and everyone who has a cake here is a winner.”
Brigade Catering Warrant Officer WO1 Maskelyne was so impressed with the entrants that he believes ‘the winner at the Divisional Competition will come from 20th Armoured Brigade.’
