BFG members were out in force supporting World Environment Day, which took place on 5 June. The ‘WED’ drive this year is carbon reduction, the UN’s 2008 slogan being “CO2 – Kick the Habit! – Towards a Low Carbon Economy.” MOD and Land Forces are placing great importance on the campaign.
As a lasting memory of WED 08, BFG produced a BFG World Environment Day 2008 Commemorative cover. 500 stamped 5p covers which were printed with the logo “Reduce your Carbon Footprint” and handed out across BFG. The aim of the Cover was to encourage people to think about the resources used in the production of the Cover and plant the seed for change.
Additionally, various activities and initiatives took place at Garrison, unit and school level, including efforts to go ‘car-free’ for the day in Rheindahlen and cycle to work. School events included running a nature trail, a ‘Carbon Footprints’ Game, a Bronze Award for Eco Schools to Lister School, Herford, fund-raising for an environmental charity, and an ‘electricity-free’ day at Slim School, Bergen-Hohne.
Major Eddie Bridges, BFG Environmental Protection Officer, said: “HQ UKSC (G) is extremely pleased with the effort put in by SCE and garrison and unit staff in support of BFG Environment Day. The evidence is clear that reducing carbon footprints not only eases the burden on our environment but also relieves the load on individual and corporate purses.”
