Get Away From It All At West Rhien Golf Club

On a site where the roar of Tornado jets is still a recent memory, there remains nothing more than the sound of golf clubs on balls, calls of ‘Fore’ and tuneful birdsong.  West Rhine Golf Club is situated at Javelin Barracks, Elmpt, the former home of RAF Brüggen, and is the best golf courses in British Forces Germany.

Just alongside the Dutch border near Roermond, the Club boasts an 18 hole course in delightful countryside, where the recent RAF base and current home to 1 Signal Brigade has kept buildings and industry at bay.  Formerly an RAF club, it dates back to the ‘50s.

The Club has a busy programme of competitions and coaching courses, and a healthy membership of BFG and some local players, but is always on the lookout for new members, with plenty of spare capacity for people wanting to pursue their sport or give it a try for the first time.

This summer’s season of activities has been as busy as ever, with numerous competitions and events. This year the club has worked hard at developing a programme for young players.  Training for youngsters is available on Thursday evenings between 1730 – 1930, comprising an hour of Professional instruction and a three hole competition.

Besides the ‘serious business’ of the golf itself, the club also runs a full programme of social activities.  With a well appointed clubhouse providing a bar and appetising meals, functions and entertainment are laid on throughout the year.

The club caters for all ages and abilities from the age of 8 upwards, with a flexible fee structure and numerous training packages, including lessons Tuesdays to Sundays.  Membership is divided into Entitled Members for BFG personnel and Season Ticket Holders for other players, while ‘casual players’ are welcome for a Green fee of €25 per day. (€20 if playing with a Club member).

“We have a very flexible programme”, says Club Professional David Symington, “besides the full competition calendar, people can play throughout the year.  We give maximum encouragement to newcomers to come along and give it a go. The club is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk, with lessons available Tuesday – Sunday, at €18.50 for half an hour, and three day tuition packages for €75.  Non members are welcome to use the Driving Range and can hire golf clubs.  Adult annual membership starts from €354 depending on rank and status.

Having trained at the Royal Troon, Ayrshire, David has 32 years experience as a professional – 12 of them at Elmpt – and is keen to expand the club, especially youth opportunities.  This summer, lessons will be available for five Thursday mornings as part of the Army Welfare Service summer children’s programme. This will be an opportunity to introduce children to the sport and bring out any particular talent. Next year the hope is to run Introductory Mornings for potential members and to set up a Juniors Section.

The club also has reciprocal arrangements with several other clubs as far afield as Bergen-Hohne. So whatever your level and interest, West Rhine Golf Club may be just right.
