SSAFA Forces Help

Although I was aware of SSAFA Forces Help and the good work that they do within the community, I was not sure how much work would be involved in being a committee member. I have found, however, that with the workload shared out between a team of ten, it is more rewarding than demanding. We meet up about once a month to discuss funding requests for individuals in need, contributions to community projects and plan our fundraising events. It takes very little time yet benefits a lot of people”.

Deborah Stewart, Chair, Ramstein In-Service Committee

SSAFA Volunteers Week

The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help was founded in 1885 and is the national charity which helps serving and ex-Service men, women and their families who are in need, suffering or in distress.
There are eleven SSAFA Forces Help In-Service Committees across Western Europe who provide assistance and support to serving men, women and their families as well as contributions to community projects. Made up entirely of volunteers, the In-Service Committees meet regularly to discuss applications for funding or other matters of concern for the local community. Every year they collectively raise and spend tens of thousands of Euros on a variety of local projects and offer financial assistance to many families in times of need.

The Volunteer Projects Office based at JHQ, Rheindahlen, offers advice and support to the In-Service Committees and organises several big events during the year such as the annual activity holiday for children with special needs and disabilities, the Young Achiever Awards ceremony which recognises the outstanding achievements of young people in Western Europe, and a number of “Big Brew Up” fundraising events during the Autumn to coincide with SSAFA Forces Help Week.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for SSAFA Forces Help or would like further information on the services SSAFA Forces Help provides, please call JHQ Mil 3392 or 02161 472 3392 or visit www.ssafa.org.uk.
