St John Ambulance

Initially, I was looking for something to do in my spare time that was not linked to the army - I quickly found however that working with St John Ambulance gave me a great sense of service to the public. Not only does it look good on your confidential report, it also leads to qualifications that are transferable to the civilian world – from basic first aid to fully trained ambulance assistant. When providing first aid cover the scope to save lives is very real and that for me is the most rewarding part”.

Gareth Mathias, St John Ambulance Volunteer, Paderborn

SSAFA Volunteers Week

St. John Ambulance is the UK's leading first aid, transport and care charity. Its mission is to provide first aid and medical support services, caring services in support of community needs and education, training and personal development to young people.

Operating in BFG since 1982, St John Ambulance now acts as a First Aid Training Group and Youth Group, and offers first aid and medical cover at any event attended by civilians on military soil. Over the years the volunteers have tended to hundreds of minor incidents, transported patients to hospital and even contributed to the saving of individual lives.

In addition to the feel good factor, there are career benefits to being a volunteer. As well as it looking good on confidential reports, it can also lead to qualifications that are transferable to the civilian world – from basic first aid to an ambulance assistant.

Volunteers can commit to as little as two hours per week plus an occasional duty. For more information, visit the St John Ambulance website on www.sja.org.uk/germany or telephone 0541 800547.
In the UK St. John Ambulance trains over half a million people each year in first aid, running a range of courses for children, the general public and the workforce. It has over 43,000 volunteers who every day, give 10,000 hours of voluntary service to the public and travel 5,000 miles providing patient care and every year treat 200,000 casualties.

With well over half of its volunteers under the age of 18, St. John Ambulance is a major youth organisation. Through participation in a structured programme of first aid and care activities, young people can develop both their personal and social skills and prepare for citizenship.
