“The young people decide what they want to do and achieve and we act as the adult support for their initiatives be it a fashion show, a competition or a sporting event. We also facilitate discussion groups, giving young people a forum in which to air their views in an informal setting. I plan to use this voluntary work as a springboard for a new career when I leave the Army in two years time. I have almost completed an NVQ in Youth Work, a civilian recognised qualification, which was funded by the AWS”.

Gary Williams, AWS Youth Worker, JHQ

SSAFA Volunteers Week

Community support provides learning and personal development opportunities through a range of planned programmes, activities and experiences for military personnel and their families. We support or supervise activities that may be social, educational or recreational. All will be responsive to need, locally accessible, affordable and of good quality. Each garrison has a community support element co-ordinated within its AWS team. Direct provision is made for the service community by professional qualified and trained community support workers, or by locally trained and experienced staff. This provision is likely to include youth and/or community centres, after school provision, special projects and holiday provision. In addition, we provide community support to the local military community and chain of command. The level of support reflects local needs, as circumstances in each garrison, station and unit are different. In making youth provision, AWS community support operates within the policy of British Forces Youth Service
