Home Phones
You can arrange to have your home phone connected by
visiting a Deutsche
Telekom (DT) shop or visiting the German
Post Office on your local Camp. Connection can take up to 4 –
6 weeks. The German
Post Office may have English speaking staff who will
fill out the forms for you.
Approximate costs for analogue connections are:
Connection Fee: € 30 – 50
Monthly Line Rental: € 15
Handset Costs: From about €15
Calls to UK: €0.17/minute
There are various connection alternatives
and full details are available from the local German Post Office
or the DT shop.
A further option available is the services offered
by TKS (Telepost
Kabel-Service) who offer English billing and support for residential
telephone and Internet customers living in Germany. Why not browse
their website to see the full range of services on offer.
Tip - Find
out the name of the previous occupant of your quarter from your Estate
Manager. If you pass on this information to the Phone Company it may
cut the connection fee by around €25 and may take a couple of days
off the installation time (if there is a gap of less than 3 months since
the previous occupant left). Bills are monthly, and you can set up a
Direct Debit from your German Bank Account.
An alternative to paying call charges direct to Deutsche
Telekom are to use companies who provide direct connection to UK
at a cheaper rate. You can either buy a card from either NAAFI (KIT
Card) or a local PRI shop – these cards offer calls to UK at
an average of approx € 0.05 per minute, or you can use a Pre-Call
tariff. This is a system whereby a number is dialled in addition
to the number you require (eg 01071 0044 141 772 8252). The cost
of the call appears on your normal DT bill. Currently calls to UK
cost approx € 0.02 per minute.
By clicking on the ‘fetznet’ tab on the (www.teltarif.de)
website users can access full details on all the Pre-Call numbers available.
Mobile Phone
Mobile Phones are available for purchase from many
shops throughout Germany. These can either be purchased with a set
Contract Tariff or on a Pay as You Go basis. If your current mobile
phone is unlocked you may be able to pick and choose your provider
and tariff, which bests suits your usage.
