Naples

NATO Joint Forces Allied Command (JFC) is located at Bagnoli, Naples, in the Southern Italian province of Campania.  The city is superbly positioned on the bay of Naples with it’s skyline dominated by Mount Vesuvius, the only volcanoon mailand Europe to have erupted in the past 100 years.

The service accommodation is situated North East of Naples in the areas of Lago Patria, Varcaturo, Licola, all between a 30-40 drive from the base.  The accommodation areas are near to the coast and close to the beach and other amenities.

Naples has a lot to offer in terms of culture and history and it pulsates with noisy street markets, selling everything from fruit and fish to handbags and shoes.  You will also find all the Designer Labels you could wish for.  Pompeii and Herculaneum are only 40 minutes approx. drive from the quartering areas.
There are many benefits of living in Naples, not least of all the climate, culture, gastronomy and history but it has to be noted that there are some drawbacks.  Naples is also an ill-built city that lives in the shadow of an active volcano and has experienced earthquakes in it’s past, the last being in 1980.

You should be aware that just like any other large conurbation, crimes, such as theft, burglary and car crime can be a problem.  However do not be put off by this, just be mindful and apply common sense and take sensible precautions to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.  Always set your house alarm when you go out and lock all your doors and shutters.  Never leave valuables in your car and only carry what you need in your wallet or purse.Grotto

Once you have adjusted to the cultural differences of life in Italy (and the driving!) you will start to appreciate the real beauty in the chaos.
