7 Sig Regt - Home at Last

7 Signal Regiment - In The Ring

A promise was made by 7 th Signal Regiment to provide a compelling demonstration of sporting endeavour and athletic achievement on the night of Friday 13 th June 2008. This promise was not only kept it was the making of the regiment’s sporting calendar.

Support Squadron
With the gym transformed into a professional boxing arena by Support Squadron, 19 soldiers from each of the squadrons had spent the previous 10 weeks transforming themselves into extremely credible and enthusiastic boxers. Tonight was their night to finally put their hard work to powerful effect, and in front of their entire Regiment.
The event was the Inter‐Squadron Boxing Competition and was held as part of the Commanding Officer’s Cup Competition 2008. The Commanding Officer 7 th Signal Regiment, Lt Col Makepeace, attended the evening with Col Norton, Acting Brigade Commander 11 Signal Brigade. Both of whom are ardent boxing enthusiasts.
Good Boxer, Bad Boxer Demo The night started off in high spirits and the atmosphere was electric in the gym on Javelin Barracks. But before the boxing commenced, there was an unusual turn of events as a dark
figure abseiled down the wall of the gym and presented the CO with a box of Milk Tray. This turned out to be the QMSI who then jumped into the ring with Sig Spencer to gamely give a
hilarious demonstration of ‘Good Boxer, Bad Boxer’.
After this spectacular performance from the well‐rehearsed Sig Spencer and QMSI, the CO entered the ring to speak to the arena. Army core values formed the basis of his speech and the CO also spoke passionately about his pride in his regiment and
all that has been achieved inside and outside of the ring in the
last year. The CO was enthusiastic in his admiration for the boxers for having the ‘guts’ to get in the ring and for doing it in front of the entire Regiment. The CO also acknowledged that the boxers were not the only ones who deserved praise for their hard work. The coaches and rest of the team behind each boxer were fundamental and just as dedicated.
Cpl Masheter looking very serious as the fights get tough As the first boxer was called into the ring tension was running
high. Sig Rayson from Support Squadron was first into the ring and unfortunately had to settle with a walk‐over due to there being no opponent.
In the first half of the night there were 5 contests, each fight displayed skills , strength and discipline that most people will
never experience.

Sig Chinn, Lcpl Yafai, Sig Anderson and Sig Taylor were all winners of their boxing category in the first half however it was not an easy task due to the stamina and skills of every one of their opponents. Most fights ended up with a spilt decision on a winner and each boxer demonstrated that they fully deserved to be in that ring. With the first half over, light refresrefreshments were served and everyone was eagerly awaiting the second half. Sig Brown, Sig Kennerley, Lcpl Mcalla, Sig Attwood and Sig Thomas were all crowned winners of the second half fights. The second half brought bigger and more physically intimidating boxers as the weight categories went up. Yet, every boxer stood their ground and fought with real passion and discipline.
Every fighter was unique in their talents as boxers and this combined with the coaches’ hard work made excellent viewing for all.

The events at the arena closed with the prize‐giving ceremony. Every boxer received either a winners or a runner‐up trophy. There were also other awards presented: Best Boxer of the night went to a well‐deserving Sig Attwood for his amazing
performance and skills in the ring and Best Loser went to Sig Chapman who, though he ultimately lost to
Sig Attwood on points, put in a tenacious and dedicated fight in every one of his rounds.Winners or loser, all boxers who took part in this Inter Squadron Boxing Contest showed demonstrated their athleticism, determination, dedication and real bravery as every one of them put
in performances to be proud of.
