GOC UKSC(G) Inter Branch Sports Competition

Once again, the staff of HQ UKSC(G) dusted off their trainers and gym kit for the final event in the GOC’s Inter-Branch Sports Competition 07/08, the Sports Day.  This year they were joined for the first time by HQ RESG, bringing the total number of teams in the competition to 6.  The Sports Day featured old favourites such as the sack race, the welly toss, the tug o’ war and a gun run, but also more traditional disciplines, including the high jump, long jump, javelin, shot-put, and sprint and middle-distance track events.

Last year’s runners up G4 branch finished top of the standings on the day with 70 points, ahead of G6 on 61 points and the combined team from G2, G3, G5 and G7 branches (aka G17) following closely in 3rd place on 60 points.

The GOC UKSC(G), Maj Gen Mungo Melvin presented the prizes and thanked the PTIs for their hard work in supporting the event.  Gen Melvin said: “This event marks the culmination of not just the summer sports phase of the competition but also the whole year’s competition.  It brings the UKSC(G) and RESG communities together and it is tremendous to see so many people, military and civilian alike, making the effort to be here despite the high level of work commitments.  My congratulations go to all those who took part and of course to the winners, G4.”

This year’s Inter-Branch Competition featured seven events in total; potted sports, cross country, volleyball, ten pin bowling, swimming, orienteering and the Sports Day.  G4’s victory in the final event meant they also narrowly beat G17 to first place in the overall competition, with 31 points to the latter’s 31.  Third place went to HQ RESG on 28 points.
