The annual BA(G) Inter Unit Rugby Sevens Competition was recently held in JHQ at the Rugby Pavilion.
Squads from across BFG travelled to Rheindahlen for the competition and were greeted with glorious sunshine which continued to shine throughout the day. The matches were held on 2 different pitches, with 14 male and 2 female teams taking part.
There were three final matches with 1 Price of Wales Royal Regiment Team (PWRR) Team B beating 1 Med Reg 36-12 in the Plate Competition.
The ladies final followed with 1 Med Regiment beating 1 Logistic Support Regiment (1LSR) with a score of 29-10. Team Captain, 2Lt Emily Corrigan was delighted with the result considering they had only just recently put the team together and they had therefore very little time to train. She said “I think everybody put loads of effort in and there was a lot of aggression there for a first game for a lot of people. Because we had a few hours rest between the two games everybody seemed very focused and put up a good fight”. And she was keen to point out that they had a bit of a star in their midst. She said ”I think Pt Sophie Hume excelled herself today with about 9 tries to herself which was pretty amazing”.
The final match was for the Cox Cup which was won by the Price of Wales Royal Regiment Team A (PWRR) against ARRC Support Battalion with a final score of 43-12. Team Captain LCpl Scorby Ratubalavu said “We last played here in 2007 and it was tougher than today. Everyone is so busy at the moment and we need to work a lot more on training but we’re delighted to win the cup”.
The GOC UKSC, Maj Gen Nick Caplin, presented the trophies and he thanked all the supporters that attended and the officials who made it all possible, particularly SMI Gareth Evans who arranged the competitions. He also congratulated all the team players taking part. He said “It’s been a great competition and it’s been a fun-filled and very exciting day. Well done and thank you to you all”.
The Band of the Army Air Corps kept the crowds entertained between games and 4 year old Joshua Ratuvou who was watching them with great interest decided to give the Band Master a helping hand. He did a fantastic job and got a massive applaud at the end.
The winning and runner up teams will go through to the Main Army Rugby Finals to be held in Aldershot on 12th May.
